This is Li’s debut, yet she writes with a confidence that suggests decades of experience. “They were all friends,” Li writes, “if one defined friendship as the natural occurrence between people who, after colliding for decades, have finally eroded enough to fit together.” The restaurant’s owners, the Han brothers, manage tensions among the staff. Multiple families, each with its roots in China, come together under the restaurant’s roof. New recruits Annie and Pat are the teenage children of staff members together they skive and complain (“every day at a Chinese restaurant was bring-your-kid-to-work day,” Annie jokes). Nan and Ah-Jack, longtime Duck House employees, yearn to turn their thirty-year friendship into something more, while Nan’s son, Pat, struggles to stay out of trouble. Jimmy’s older brother, Johnny, is more concerned with restoring the dignity of the family name than his faltering relationship with his own teenage daughter, Annie. ![]() Owner Jimmy Han has ambitions for a new high-end fusion place, hoping to eclipse his late father’s homely establishment. The popular Beijing Duck House in Rockville, Maryland has been serving devoted regulars for decades, but behind the staff’s professional smiles simmer tensions, heartaches and grudges from decades of bustling restaurant life. RELATED: Review: The Diary of a Bookseller - Shaun Bythell About Number One Chinese Restaurant With scheming brothers, underhand Uncle Pang, and long-suffering mother and badly behaved children to contend with, there’s barely a quiet moment at this Rockville restaurant.Ī pacy, plot-driven tale about familial ties, loyalty and resentment, all the while underpinned with a dark humour and simmering tension that bubbles to the surface, it’s easy to see why the smart and steadfast Number One Chinese Restaurant is a surefire contender for this year’s Women’s Prize for Fiction. One of the book’s biggest selling points for me was its rich cast of colourful characters, all of whom grow and evolve throughout the story. Nan’s seventeen year old son, Pat, has recently been expelled from school so now works a lowly job at the restaurant, while Ah-Jack’s wife is in the late stages of cancer with mounting medical bills. A long-running restaurant beloved by many, two of its key employees, Nan and Ah-Jack, continue to work despite their advancing years as they struggle to support their dependents. Managed by brothers Kimmy and Johnny Han, who inherited it from their late father Bobby. Published to wide critical acclaim from the likes of Book Riot, Publisher’s Weekly and The Financial Times, Number One Chinese Restaurant is a memorable debut from this American author, set within the Chinese immigrant community of Maryland and centred around popular eatery, The Duck House restaurant. And so, while the first of the books I read from the 2019 Women’s Prize for Fiction long-list was a writer I already knew the second was one I’d not yet come across. One of the joys of reading literary prize lists – other than the excuse to carve out even more time that usual for books – is the reading of authors you might otherwise not have come across.

It’s no sports car, but it’s quiet, comfortable, and offers excellent year-round traction with its all-wheel drive system. This is a vehicle that you can enjoy on the freeway or on a winding secondary road. There’s plenty of power, and the SUV rides with perfect Mercedes aplomb. The GLE drives very well on the electric motor. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, and of course there’s a mobile device charging pad. The advanced Mercedes-Benz User eXperience (MBUX) provides some of the best voice control on the market today, plus enhanced reality navigation and more. On the dash, you get a single pane of glass that stretches from the driver’s side to the center of the vehicle. The GLE will modulate its speed based on the map of the road ahead, to make sure you don’t hit a corner too fast, and it will automatically obey all speed limits, unless you choose not to. The handles on the GLE’s center console seem more an affectation than a necessity.Īs you would expect from Mercedes-Benz, there’s a full suite of safety and advanced driver assistance tech in the GLE, and this test vehicle came with the optional driver assistance package, including adaptive cruise control, steering assistance, lane change and emergency stop functions, evasive steering assistance, active blind spot assistance, and even a function where the vehicle prepares itself if someone’s about to hit you from behind. As an example, I took my 82-year-old mother out to lunch in the GLE, and she liked the handle. The handles do provide someplace for the front-seat passenger to put their hand. It looks like they’re designed with the idea that you’ll be going off-road like a G-Wagen, but that’s really not happening with a GLE. Little touches make the difference, like the handles on either side of the center console. The seats are supremely comfortable, heated and ventilated, and the touch surfaces and appointments are high-quality. This is a vehicle designed for commuting in comfort, or for taking the whole family. Brod asked whether there was hope elsewhere in the universe. Speaking to his friend Max Brod, Kafka once explained that he thought human beings were God’s nihilistic thoughts. In alignment with Kafka’s largely cynical philosophical views, The Metamorphosis supports a decidedly pessimistic interpretation of human nature. All three texts connect materialism and status consciousness with the degradation of humanity. The Metamorphosis, furthermore, resembles Gordin’s drama in its entirely domestic setting and episodic narrative structure. Gregor Samsa’s counterpart is an idiot son, who is unable to communicate with his family, stays locked in his room, and fears the wrath of his father. All of the characters in The Metamorphosis find analogues in The Savage One. Kafka wrote extensively about the play in his diaries. Kafka’s text was also inspired by a Yiddish play, Gordin’s The Savage One. In addition to these autobiographical references, The Metamorphosis alludes to a number of literary works, including the Russian Nikolay Gogol’s The Nose, in which a man wakes up to find his nose missing preposterously, the nose goes on to attain a high-ranking position in the civil service. Although Kafka had earned a law degree in part to appease his father, he would remain an object of patriarchal disdain and repudiation-particularly in light of his fictional work, which his father deemed “a waste of time.” Kafka’s mother, like her alter ego in the story, was ever-deferential to her husband and offered little solace to her son his sister, Ottla, was normally a compassionate ally, but on one occasion she joined the parents in insisting that Kafka increase his hours at the office shortly thereafter, Kafka wrote The Metamorphosis, in which Gregor’s sister betrays him by insisting that the family get rid of him. ![]() Gregor, likewise, cowers in fear of his father, who finds him repulsive and attacks him at every turn. Like his creation, Gregor, Kafka was continually berated by his imposing father, who considered his only son to be an unmitigated failure. But the story resonates most profoundly with the real circumstances of Kafka’s family life. Kafka’s anxieties about ill health and fear of physical collapse play out in the unfortunate Gregor, who dies from a wound inflicted on him by his father. In a letter, Kafka mentioned the similarity between Samsa’s name and his own both writer and character, furthermore, were pressured to take on largely pointless office jobs. Like much of Kafka’s fiction, The Metamorphosis expresses dominant themes in the author’s own life. If you resize the sidebar in an Open or Save dialog, Default Folder X will make sure it bounces back to that size the next time you use the same file dialog. The sidebar still bounces back to its narrow, “I can’t read the names of my folders” width of about 100 pixels every second time you use an Open or Save dialog. Default Folder X 5.5.4 brought a fix for this – forcing the dialogs back to your preferred, larger size whenever they came up.įast forward to Big Sur 11.2, and Apple has fixed the bug so dialogs now stay larger once you resize them – yay! Well, mostly yay anyway. Use HoudahSpot to locate hard-to-find files and keep. To see anything in the dialog, you pretty much had to resize them. HoudahSpot v4.1.4 is a powerful yet accessible desktop search software.
